My God...

I don't consider myself a religious scholar or even that well versed in the Bible. I was a lapsed Catholic who found my way home through my husband (who is Lutheran) and my children. I am not as eloquent as Heather but I feel compelled in my heart to say something.

Someone I know said that maybe Haiti has such bad "luck" (poverty, multiple hurricanes in 2008, now the earthquake) because they made voodoo their national religion. I don't believe that my God is a vengeful God. I don't believe He brings natural disasters to certain areas weather it be Haiti or New Orleans. I don't believe he causes things like cancer to happen to people as a result of their sins. Part of it is that I still consider myself a scientist. I studied the earth I know earthquakes are cause by tectonic plates and shifts. I studied a lot of biology, I know that cancer is caused by an errant cell who doesn't do what it is supposed to do, not because of the sins of the person.

Mostly I believe this though because I believe in my God. I believe in what He said to Noah, that never again will their be a flood to destroy the earth. I believe that he will deal with the evil in the sinners in his own way when they are face to face and I pray for them because I don't want to know what the afterlife will be for them.

I may not be able to spew quotes from the Bible or eloquently verbalize the faith that is in my heart, but it's there and it's strong and it's real. Many may think that this is a juvenile way to approach my faith, and I give you this Matthew 18:3:

And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

You cannot wipe out the bad without taking some of the good, and juvenile or not, I don't believe my God would ever wipe out the good again, just to punish the bad.

that was beautifully said. I too am not very good at verbalizing the faith that is my heart regarding my personal relationship with my God, but I do believe that God is all love and peace and that God would not cause innocent people to die.

I'm studying biochem and anatomy in grad school now and the way cells divide and cancer is caused I think might be partly a result of our own beliefs towards ourselves (and the other stuff like environment, cell damage from free radicals etc) so believing that God is not vengeful and is peaceful and loving, I think anyways, might even contribute to a healthier self.
I feel sorry for people who think that God is behind stuff like that.

You ARE eloquent. You're expressing your heart, there's nothing more eloquent than that.

Thank you for sharing it with us. Really.

Peace,
Heather

Oh I think that was perfectly eloquent. Exactly what needed to be said. I can't even believe that (so called) Christians could possibly believe that God would do something like that.

Thanks for stopping by yesterday.

I couldn't agree more. In my heart, I know the God I know and love would not punish innocent children just for the sinners. I know this.

Wonderfully said. As Christians we know that we all deserve God's wrath because we are all sinners. Thankfully he doesn't do things like that to punish us.

Wow, I can't believe someone would actually say that?!? Awful. Well put.
