The Perfect Ponytail

Her name was Kathy*.

She was never in my class but I always seemed to run into her in the halls. Kathy seemed perfect, she was smart, friendly, nice to the point of making you sick she was so sweet. However there is one thing that sticks out in my mind about her. One thing that I wanted so badly in grade school, heck the thing that I want to this day, is her perfect ponytail.

It was perfect, always. Her dark shiny hair smoothed back perfectly to the tie. Never a lump or bump, a frizzy stray hair, or any of those weird loops that I get. Her pony always stayed in exactly the same place on her head never sliding down or falling out. It mesmerized me with the way it moved. She would walk down the hall with her (of course) perfect posture and the pony would perkily swing from side to side in perfect rhythm with her cadence.

As a little girl I was transfixed and enamored with Kathy’s ponytail. See as a young girl (with two other young girls in the house) I had unruly wavy hair. My mom kept it short, Hamill Bobs, Mary Lou Retton cuts, short, sweet, and nothing to put in a pony. I think I was a junior in high school before I had enough hair for a pony tail.

Obtaining that perfect pony has been a life long dream. I know I will never have the smooth frizz free hair, I have curls. What I really want and cannot emulate is the perfect sway. I don’t know how she did it! No matter where on my head I place the pony the only way it sways from side to side is if I make some kind of wiggly, wobbly, speed sway walking thing that looks as ridiculous as Phoebe running or Elaine dancing.

I achieved the perfect sway once. I almost blogged about it than. I had a high pony that look ridiculous from the front, but I was going for a run so I didn’t care. I noticed it as I walked to my porch to stretch and don my shoes. Swish, swish, swish. It was swaying, I was just walking. Hurray! Then I looked int he mirror and realized, the problem isn’t with my pony. It’s the shape of my head/face. I can’t pull off a high pony without looking like I Dream of Jeanie.

It's taken over 30 years but I have realized I will never have Kathy’s perfect ponytail. I’m sure, because the world is ironic, Kathy wished she had my curls. The good news is I get another chance at the perfect ponytail. I have a little girl, and so far her hair is as straight as her daddies.

* I think, I have the worst memory in the history of the world when it comes to names. Seriously. I will remember a face. I can picture her perfectly, but names? The escape my brain synapses, it has only gotten worse since having children.

I've never been able to get the perfect pony either. It's always bumpy or not right. My daughter? Perfect. Hers is just like the Barbie flip. Love it.

I'm right there with ya. My daughter? Well, she doesn't like having her hair up. But, alas, not all hope is lost, she has a little sister. We will have to wait and see.

You brought me back with this post. I remember how much I loved the feeling of a long ponytail swishing back and forth as I walked.
I might just grow my hair long again!

I never had a perfect pony - my hair was superfine and limp. I probably would have killed for your curly hair!
Oh, how this brings me back!

Stopping by from Mama Kat's!

What memories! The Dorothy Hamill and Mary Lou Retton, I had both too. Glad you're getting a second chance with your daughter's hair. By the way, I had very fine, stick straight hair until my mid 30's, now I'm 37 and now have not beautiful, but very nice ringlets. Don't give up hope for yourself quite yet.
