Spirit

“It came without ribbons! It came without tags! It came without packages, boxes, or bags!’ And he puzzled three hours ’til his puzzler was sore. THEN the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before! ‘Maybe Christmas,’ he thought, ’doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas…perhaps…means a little bit more!”- How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Dr. Seuss

Spirit.

It is not something that can be bottled or wrapped.
It’s not something that can really even be taught.
Spirit is something that must come from within. Deep, down, felt in the soul and understood with the heart.

It’s easily confused as magic.
But magic is fleeting.
Lost when it is taught, figured out.
Spirit can be questioned, tested, tried, dampened, but never lost.

It is always there.
Buried perhaps, under layers of anger, grief, confusion.
Waiting to be recognized.
Ready to revive, warm, and comfort.

People have tried to bottle it, sell it, guarantee it.
In bright packages with bows, in lights on trees, in prices on TV’s.
They convince themselves, and you, and me that Spirit can be sought out, tracked down and sold for the lowest price.

It’s can’t.

The Spirit isn’t found in the fleeting magic on a child's face as the open a new toy.
The Spirit isn’t found in getting a great price on the bigger, better, newer TV when there is nothing wrong with yours.
The Spirit isn’t found running breathless from one party, event, must see, must do.

The Spirit is in the joyous sounds of a child voice singing Alleluia.
It’s found in tiny hands grasping your pinky.
It’s found in the beauty and wonder of the first snow.
It’s found in the wonder and joy a child finds in the world around them, from snow to a frozen bug.

You can see the Spirit shared between strangers as they help each other.
Or in a family clinging to each other in a time of need.
You can feel the Spirit when you are needed, loved, held up by another.
You can sense it in that quiet place in your heart when you give it the time and space to glow.

It’s found in light.
In love.
In family.
In faith.

It’s found in you, and me and Him.

It will find you, when you take the time. When you stop looking for it, stop trying to capture it.

It will capture you.

Oh, Mel, this was absolutely perfect for today.
I just love this, friend. It's true -- magic fades with knowledge ... but Spirit enhances with it.
So beautiful! So, so beautiful!

What a well thought out post. The spirit is something that is almost palpable. We are blessed to have it within our lives. You are right that magic does fade. That is when we must look within. It isn't too hard to find.

This was exquisite. Thank you!
