Doing it Right {Bigger Picture Moments}

“Do it right the first time and you’ll only have to do it once”

That line is said in my house at least a dozen times a day.

The kids come home, drop their stuff in the doorway and run off to play. When I call them back they huff and puff and whine

“Do it right the first time and you’ll only have to do it once”

The dishwasher (or laundry) is emptied but everything is just thrown haphazardly in a drawer. I make them do it again.

“Do it right the first time and you’ll only have to do it once”

Most always it’s not for lack of knowledge on how to do it right, or lack of ability. It is almost always do to speed. The desire to plow through get it done so they can move on to the next thing, the thing they really want to do.

I’m laying with the baby. She’s overtired and fussy. We’ve nursed we’ve cuddle now she’s just barely falling asleep, I know it’s probably too soon to get up but I have things to do. So I sneak out of the room and make my way downstairs. Before my foot hits the first floor she is crying (screaming).

Sigh. Huff. Puff. Stomp back up the stairs. I have so much to do! Just go to sleep!

“Do it right the first time and you’ll only have to do it once”

It slaps me in the face.

I know if I lay with her for 5-15 minutes she will go peacefully to sleep and I will get the time I need to do what needs to be done. Yet I rush through, I try to make her go down early on her own, I try to just do it so I can move on to the next thing.

Once again the lessons that I am teaching my children have come back and are teaching me just as much (more?) than it is teaching them.

* No the pictures have nothing to do with the post. I just liked them, and let's be honest when will a city girl like me ever have a reason to post a picture of an abandoned boot on a beach?

Oh, yes. I fight this, too. Every day. Just do it right the first time. So easy and so hard.

I remember those days, and I remember doing EXACTLY that! Great reminder, for everything in life. Babies or dishes. :)

What a great reminder you present here -- to slow down, be mindful and give everything its due attention. Thanks for sharing this so nicely and what a great mantra in your home. I may just be borrowing this for my home tomorrow. :)
