Lives not Homes { Bigger Picture Moments }

This past weekend was Creative Soul, it was a lovely day spent with lovely women. One of the things that came up over and over again was balancing work, creativity, life. In fact it’s what my presentation was on. (you can watch The Myth of Balance on YouTube -  it’s unedited and just under 20 minutes)

I came home both refreshed and exhausted, it’s a funny state to be in. My mind was ready to go, full of ideas, my body was like - nap? There was also so much to catch up on, not the least of which was laundry. Lets just be real honest here, I also have two boxes of Christmas that I have to finish packing up. I was frustrated and tired and I just wanted my body to cooperate and not hurt for the day so I could catch up.

I was expressing frustration with my husband that I was so tired and sore and wanted to lay down but there was this, and this, and oh that and... and... and...

He gave me a big hug and said “Were building a life not a home...there will be time for all that later”

Oh let’s hear that again.

We’re building a life not a home

Ah  yes. We’re not designing a house to be featured in Home and Garden. We’re not decorating to be featured in a Pottery Barn Catalog. We are growing little people. Nurturing their brains and souls. We’re not packing up Christmas because we are having tickle parties and cuddling over books.

This season of life is not defined by the design and {lack of} order in my house  It’s defined by the hugs of toddlers, the smiles on my kids faces, the time spent as a family. My time in this season is limited, there will be plenty of time for the home when it’s not filled with the pattering little feet of young children.

Yes. Yes!

I am so glad you posted the video...just finished watching.

Such wise words. I always need that reminder...I tend to get focused on my own needs because my kids are older and then it bites me in the butt...thanks Melissa for these reminders.

I just love this! So good to remember! I'm looking forward to watching the video since I couldn't go to Creative Soul.

Just finished watching your video. I love what you say at the end about how we all need to just figure out what's most important to us, and also that we need to figure out what's stopping us from DOING, and just go out and DO. YES to that!
